ALLERGIES & FOOD SENSITIVITIES

What is an allergy?

An allergy is a damaging immune response by the body to a substance, especially a particular food, pollen, fur, or dust, to which it has become hypersensitive. Allergy occurs when a person’s immune system reacts to substances in the environment that are harmless for most people.

Allergies and food sensitivities can affect people in different ways, and can be associated with:

  • Mouth ulcers
  • Ear infections
  • Depression
  • Migraines
  • Coughing
  • Weight gain
  • Fatigue
  • Bladder infections
  • Eczema
  • Insomnia
  • Gastrointestinal disturbances

Food sensitivities

A food that we generally perceive to be a healthy food, your body may perceive as a poison, and turns on an immune reaction to clear it from the body as quickly as possible. If you are consuming this food daily or even up to three times a day, your immune system is constantly fighting and reacting.

Once you’ve identified your sensitivities and avoid them, you take a huge load off your immune system and often see results within days, being able to think clearer, and experiencing less pain. Once you have avoided the food for a number of months you may be able to tolerate this food again without your body reacting.

There are two things to remember with allergies and food sensitivities – not all allergy testing is the same and accurate, and not all sensitivities are associated with a food immediately (it can be up to two to three days before the symptom may appear).

At Coolum Naturopathic, we use blood testing that uses whole and live blood samples to determine how the whole immune system responds to a food. Once we’ve discovered your food enemy, we can set you on a course to a happier, healthier outcome.
